Movie Mondays: In Your Eyes

This weekend I wanted to buckle down and get some work done with regards to the blog and my flat that has been on the back burner for quite sometime which has made me feel so guilty these past few months. Anyway, this meant I could not go to the cinema but Netflix flew in to save the day. I had a look through my recommended picks and found this sweet Zoe Kazan film that sounded like it would indeed be right up my street.

The first movie I saw Zoe Kazan in was What If (starring Daniel Radcliffe) which I loved and thought her performance in that was great. So, I knew that even if the plot of In Your Eyes was slightly soppy and/or predictable, I would still find it a good watch which it was. A good watch I mean. It was the perfect way to end my Saturday after transcribing an interview I did a while ago and sprucing up the flat.

In Your Eyes is not your typical romantic drama which is to be expected as the script was penned by Joss Whedon (Avengers: Age of Ultron; The Cabin in the Woods; Buffy the Vampire Slayer). You can also expect the storyline to have an mini affair with the world of fantasy/sci-fi but told in such an imaginative way that it becomes believable. Anyway, In Your Eyes is about two people are vastly different but connected in the unlikeliest of ways which brings a bit of light to their otherwise grey worlds. And though this film does deal with the dynamic nature of love and has a few comedic elements, it also sheds light on the power of perception and the reality of mental illness. Directed beautifully by Brin Hill (Ball Don't Lie; Morning Breath), the tone and vibe of this film is just right that I am sure I will watch it again.

Connecting with another human being on a level reminiscent of the way Rebecca and Dylan do in this film would be so weird but oddly comforting to know that at least one person on this planet is completely aware of you. Rebecca Porter, a thoughtful, kind but timid housewife was played beautifully by Zoe Kazan (What If; Ruby Sparks; Revolutionary Road). And the chemistry between her and Michael Stahl-David (The Congress; Cloverfield; The Black Donnellys), who took on the role of Dylan Kershaw, a smart and loyal mini magnet for ill fortune, is hard to ignore. Nikki Reed (Empire State; The Twilight Saga; Thirteen) makes an appearance in this film as Donna - a woman who appreciates the simple things - alongside Steve Harris (Diary of a Mad Black Woman; The Practise), who plays a man invested in his clients called Giddons, which was a pleasant surprise. Mark Feuerstein (Royal Pains; Good Morning, Miami; What Women Want) took on the role of the driven, calculative and austere Phillip Porter and played it well. My goodness. And the manner in which these characters and many more interacted with each other made this movie an interesting watch I can tell you that.

Sometimes it's not knowing how and why things happen that matters but rather what you decide to do now that it has that does; that is what In Your Eyes reminded me of. If you are in the mood for a film is a good mix of drama, intrigue, romance and wit then check this one out. It may just float your boat.
